Agriturismo Pieve San Paolo
has its name derived from the small church which is part of this historical
building. The church itself dates back to at least the early 13th century.
Ecclesiastical documents that were found, refer to San Paolo in Fagnille
back as early as 1208.
It is
believed the site was probably a Roman or Etruscan place of worship. This
seems to complement the story of the Etruscan bronze statue that was melted
down and used to make the original bells at San Paolo (one of which is
now on display in the local museum).
Additional
sections were added on to the church over the centuries to give us what
we now have as Pieve San Paolo. The building was at one time the centre
of the local community and housed the school and its teacher along with
the Church and its priest.
The surrounding area is called Fagnille which comes from the Italian word for sparks. Centuries ago these sparks would fill the air when the nearby medieval signalling tower at Montalto was blazing away. The tower has recently been restored and is perched majestically over our area once more.
Agriturismo
Pieve San Paolo is situated in the northern most part of Marche
(also called le Marche) in an area called Apecchio. The comune
of Apecchio lies on Marches borders with Umbria and Tuscany.
Marche itself covers the upper central part of Italy, from the Apennine mountain ranges over to the adriatic coastal resorts of Pesaro, Fano, Senigallia and Conero (to name but a few).

Wherever possible we have retained all the original stonework at San Paolo, Inside and out. Inside there are some amazing stones, which are beleived to be the basis of a Roman or Etruscan temple, which was built on over time to create the church foundations that stand today.
BACK
Pieve San Paolo is situated among rolling scenery that will take your breath away. From the cascading hills flowing down into Umbria, to the impressive mountains of Nerone and Catria. These views will inspire you to enjoy nature at its best.
Impressive
wildlife obviously comes along with this setting, with a myriad of animals
such as wild deer, wild boar and porcupines to name but a few. Eagles,
nesting at nearby Monte Nerone,
pay regular visits to our skyline, along with various other birds of prey.
The
spring and summer landscape is filled with masses of colour. Wild fruits
growing on almost every turn of the pathways. There are plants and flowers
galore, poppy fields being some of
the most impressive. Around these, busily fluttering about, are butterflies
of every colour.
During
the wheat harvesting between June and July, Agriturismo Pieve San Paolo
plays host to another spectacular sight. As if history were repeating
itself, the night sky becomes filled with sparks once again, when the
Lucciole (fireflies) cover the landscape like a magic shroud.
The butterflies and lucciole thrive in this area because of the clean
air and minimal use of chemicals on the organic farms.
BACK
As a working organic agriturismo, our harvest cropping season covers most of the summer months. Our fruit crops consist of different varieties of raspberries, blackberries, blackcurrants and several varieties of apples.
There
are other wild crops around the property too, including plums, cherries,
figs, walnuts, redcurrants and elderberries! If you wish, you can
even get involved in picking some of the crop, then follow the jam making
process from the fruits you help pick.
The
comune of Apecchio is well known for its mushroom crops and abundance
of white and black tartufi (truffles).
The area around San Paolo is a regular haunt for many specialised truffle
hunters..
